I feel as if I'm going through some heart-wrenching break up — I can't eat, I can't sleep, I forget about it for two minutes and then remember all over again, holding back tears. I'm sure so many of us are feeling the same, and I wish I had more cohesive words. For now I'm just wading through my grief, trying to put one foot in front of the other, holding onto the hope that someday I'll be able to have more faith in our future.
But I'm also remembering love. Because love still trumps hate. Love will always trump hate.
I believe this so strongly that I have the words just love tattooed on my arm. I firmly believe that love is always the answer. When they go low, we go high.
I made this little graphic in a haze of shock following the announcement that Trump had won, the evening of our Wednesday the 9th here in Sydney. I'd been glued to CNN all day, watching in horror as it all slowly unfolded. I collapsed into bed that night and realized that I wasn't going to be able to stay away from my home country for four years like I'd planned if Trump got elected. I didn't really believe he would — I didn't think he possibly could.
I began to realize that more than ever, I'd have to go home. We can't all flee to Canada. If everyone who had the ability to leave the country actually left, what would happen to the people who don't have that capability? It is from an extremely privileged position that I say I'd leave the country. Not everyone has that privilege. And so I realize that to not return home would be incredibly selfish.
I began to realize that more than ever, we need Americans who are steadfast in our beliefs of love and kindness and acceptance and understanding. We cannot leave. We cannot shy away. Trump may have won but he cannot win. He will not win.
10% of each sale will be donated to the ACLU, because damn if we don't need as many people as we can helping us out in this next (scary) chapter of our country.
The campaign will end on November 17th, and you can expect shirts to arrive in the mail one week after the campaign ends. (International shipping will take longer.)
No president can ever take love away from us. Let's rise up, shine our lights, and remind each other always: love still trumps hate.
We're in this together, friends. From my heart to yours.
